Being considerate to our neighbours
Havering Council’s Environment Department have circulated advice on being considerate to neighbours by avoiding making excessive noise. Below is a summary of their advice –
To help everyone cope with the present difficult circumstances please be aware as to how your actions, or those of your family, could give rise to considerable stress and anxiety to fellow residents.
Please consider the following:
- Be aware of the volume of any amplified music played, particularly between 11pm and 7am.
- Noisy DIY should only take place between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays, with no noisy works on Sundays, Bank or Public Holidays.
- Please think about neighbours who are elderly, have young children or are self-isolating for medical reasons. Excessive domestic noise, such as banging or dogs barking, particularly at unsociable hours, can cause severe disturbance to your neighbours, who may be feeling stressed by being forced to stay at home.
Here are some tips to minimise the impact of noise on your neighbours:
- Use carpets, rugs and soft furnishings to absorb noise.
- Position equipment away from shared walls.
- Use headphones.
- Only undertake activities which create noise during times that you believe your neighbours are awake, and never between 11pm and 7am.
We encourage everybody to be considerate of their neighbours both when making and hearing noise.
The Council will continue to deal with noise nuisance which substantially interferes with the home-life of others, or is likely to have a detrimental impact on their health. Please report issues of serious noise nuisance via the Havering Council website.
Some noises can indicate a more serious problem, so if you are concerned about a person’s safety please don’t hesitate to call 999.
