Campaign to Give Under 18s a Voice on Climate Issues

We normally try to keep our website focused on local issues but we do occasionally make exceptions.

This week, we were contacted by the headteacher of Torquay Girls’ Grammar School in Devon, to promote a parliamentary petition the pupils have started. The petition is proposing that the government create a mechanism by which the views of the under 18s across Britain can be canvassed by politicians in relation to climate issues, as they believe that under 18s should be given the opportunity to express their views on local national and international climate policies. Amongst others, they have received written support for they campaign from David Attenborough.

The pupils have produced a 2-minute video, which can be viewed via this link. It is a green version of Billy Joel’s we didn’t start the fire.

To sign their parliamentary petition, which needs 100,000 signatures to be considered for a debate in parliament, see this link.
