Fireworks and the Law
There is often some uncertainty around fireworks and the law – when and where they can be bought and are there time restrictions about setting them off?
Information from the Government is set out below:
You must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am. The exceptions are:
- Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight
- New Year’s Eve, Diwali (11 to 15 Nov ‘15) and Chinese New Year (8 Feb ‘16), when the cut off is 1am
Buying fireworks
You can only buy fireworks (including sparklers) from registered sellers for private use on these dates:
- 15 October to 10 November
- 26 to 31 December
- 3 days before Diwali and Chinese New Year
At other times you can only buy fireworks from licensed shops.
You can be fined up to £5,000 and/or imprisoned for up to 6 months for selling or using fireworks illegally. You could also get an on-the-spot fine of £90.
Apart from that, happy fireworks!

Someone should remind the people at the west end of Gaynes Park Road who were letting of thunderous bangers over a 30 minute period that ended at 11.30pm last Wednesday (11th).
