A Glimpse into the Former Shops of Upminster
Shop sign renewal and renovations can sometimes give us a brief glimpse into the past. In this case, fitters working on the former Poetic Design shop in Station Road (next to the small Costa Coffee) reveal it was once two shops, Jeannette which sold fruit & veg and Valerie’s the florist (maybe from the 1980s?).
Last year, as the former Alishan Restaurant became Elbi’s, refurbishment work revealed it was once known as Mead’s Bar in decades gone by.
Poetic Design shop will soon be replaced by James Reed opticians who are currently on the opposite side of the road next door to where Kindas used to be.
Back in the 1950s the Greengrocer was “Spicers”. I cannot recall the name of the Florist but I remember getting violets from there on Mothering Sunday.
I think the florist shop was called Williams.
Cafe Nero was a newsagents called RAMSAYS …..the lady owner lived in Hall Lane
Also along their was Taylor’s fresh fish shop
Next door to that was a gentleman’s clothes shop I think hand made suits
Can anyone tell me the name of a ladies wear shop ???? Gowns where my Mummy bought her dresses and as they said costumes? It was on Corbetts Tey Road
Townes’s. my mother ran it and we lived above the shop
I think Boyton Gowns
