Haven House Hospice charity walk

Haven House Children’s Hospice Chief Executive, and long standing Hornchurch resident, Mike Palfreman turned 60 this year and to mark this special milestone he will be joining two friends, Paul Turrell and Simon Fanning (accompanied on various legs by over 40 friends and colleagues), who will be following in the footsteps of Sir Ian Botham, walking the length of Great Britain, from John O’Groats to Land’s End. This mammoth walk, 900 miles in just one month, is to raise a staggering £100,000 for Haven House, money that will be crucial to the charity in the current crisis.

Throughout his ten years at the hospice, Mike has completed numerous walking challenges with friends and colleagues – once this walk is completed, together they calculate they will have walked 40,000km – the circumference of the world.

Mike said: “This is my 60th birthday year and my 10th year at Haven House Children’s Hospice, so we wanted to undertake something particularly challenging and memorable. The fact that the current coronavirus crisis is making life very uncertain for the hospice, makes the timing even more crucial. That’s why every pound we raise from the walk will be critical to ensure we can keep making the massive difference we do to the lives of sick children and their families across NE London and beyond. As someone who has lived in Hornchurch my whole life, I’m proud that we’re making a real difference to many lives in Havering.”
