It’s Good to Talk!

Many readers may remember the pre-mobile phone days, when public phone boxes were a necessity. We are lucky to have an old BT phone box situated outside Clockhouse Gardens, St Mary’s Lane. Until recently, it had fallen into an awful state, with graffiti sprayed over the glass panels and the paint was faded and shabby.

Councillor Jacqueline Williams, together with the Council’s heritage team, arranged for the phone box to be repainted and cleaned up. The work was undertaken by Tapestry, a local charity based in Hornchurch. The Association are immensely grateful to them for restoring the phone box to its former glory.

A beacon of post box red in Upminster, the phone box is listed and was saved for future generations by the late former Councillor Linda Hawthorn.
