A petition as been launched by the Upminster & Cranham Residents’ Association opposing the proposed removal of the free 30-minutes parking in Upminster & Hornchurch (but kept elsewhere) as well as setting hugely increased parking charges across the borough, including £1.50 to park on a Sunday (was free) as well as charging £1.50 to park in Upminster Park for 1 hour.
The Residents’ Association petition opposes the draconian increases and calls upon the conservative led council to withdraw the detrimental proposals. The petition can be viewed and signed HERE
The petition joins another excellent version by local shopkeeper Barry Major (which can be viewed and signed HERE).
Our High Streets and town centres already face enormous challenges with business rates, rents and on-line competition. These incredibly damaging car parking charges proposals will be enough to deter any would be shopper and demonstrates an astonishing lack of understanding or empathy in local economies. The Council should be working with the business community and residents to keep our High Streets alive and sustainable, instead these highly damaging proposals will simply see the demise of our High Streets and Town Centres.
See our website for updates on an alternative budget that saves our 30-minutes free parking at https://www.ucra.co.uk/
I assume the Councillors who dreamt this up have never run a small business in their life. Pray tell how this ridiculous idea can possibly help the small businesses in Upminster……. Why would I want to pay a minimum of £2 to stop for five minutes to collect dry cleaning or a paper when I drive to Lakeside for less and not pay for parking.

A prime example of a Council that have never run a business. A really short sighted and stupid decision. Hoppy Hall car park already hardly used due to extortionate parking charges.
All you here is brexit brexit brexit let them get on with the job in hand but these parking charges are a absolutel dis grace and I will never vote for a conservative again
At the very least keep the 30 mins free!!! The charges will kill the High Street but without the free 30 minutes option to pop into one or two shops when I can drive somewhere and park for free 🤔.
The Councillor(s) who decided this clearly do not live in the real world. The parking is difficult enough anyway (not many spaces) and the cost will now just tip the balance and make people head to the big supermarkets and park for FREE!
Local shops will die out, people will lose jobs and councils will lose revenue.
These people were elected to represent us but clearly couldn’t give a monkey’s about our opinions! If the council are so short of revenue, why are they still drawing down such huge wages for screwing us over?!!
As you are hopefully aware, the Residents’ Association councillors who represent Upminster and Cranham strongly oppose these parking proposals and are campaigning to stop them.
We were fined for stopping in Upminster bus stop for 78 seconds when our 4 year old had opened the car door from the inside. Our appeal was overruled because his safety was clearly less important than their money grabbing. This council will stop at nothing to extract money from car drivers. They’ll probably start charging for stopping at traffic lights next! There are plenty of places in Essex where I can park for free, so I’ll just change some of my routines. It will be the Upminster shop owners who really suffer. Upminster will go down hill and it won’t be such an attractive place to live. The council should be ashamed of themselves.
Have the council ever thought that by increasing parking charges overall revenues could mostly likely go down. Take the Wetherspoons pub chain business model for example. Whether you like them or not, they are successful because they rely on volume at low cost. Other pubs whom charge much higher prices are dying. Doesnt take mastermind to understand that! Increase car parking charges will most probably reduce revenues and kill local businesses to boot. People have choices.
I would also like to endorse Mr Jim Metham’s comments. Maybe the appeal adjudicator doesnt have children or doesnt like them. An honest reason and safety should be number 1. Disgraceful.
How can local businesses compete with free parking in other areas, eg Sainsbury’s and Tesco stores. This will leave us with decaying local high streets.
A sure-fire way of destroying local shops.

I often nip toblocal shops to support independent traders but won’t if parking costs are so high

The end of the local shops and less business rates going to the Council when shops close what a genius idea !
Please keep our 30 minute free parking. It’s just killing local businesses.

Ruination of the high street and local businesses.
Once again an inefficient council trying to scrape money from the motorist to the detriment of local businesses.

Stupid and ill thought.

This policy leads to the death of local higstreets, a backward step not allowing people to use their local businesses and amenities.
