Upminster Traffic Congestion

Over the last week the phasing of the traffic lights at Bell Corner has led to long delays along Station Road stretching back towards the A127. Transport for London (TfL) are responsible for the lights and their sequencing and we have been in touch with them several times to express our dismay at the current phasing and to get them to recalibrate the lighting sequence. We expect this to be fixed asap and are also meeting with them this week to get this sorted out on a longer term basis.

Unfortunately, the situation has been made even worse by numerous roadworks in the area which have temporary traffic lights leading to motorists seeking alternative routes.

To register a complaint with TfL about the traffic lights please visit TfL or call 0343 222 1234.

We shall keep you advised on this.

  1. The traffic situation is a joke. I have been late every morning this week for work. I only have to get to Harwood hall lane and it’s takin of 50min. Today I spent 40 min from Avon road to the station. This can’t carry on.

  2. I have just left a complaint for TfL. Thanks for the link. Whoever rephased those lights should be told off – it’s made journeying through Upminster absolutely horrendous.

  3. Whatever the clever clogs did around Upminster at TFL can you kindly undo this as it’s clearly a total distaster. I live 3/4 up Hall Lane towards the A127 and in 2 1/2 years I have never seen traffic at a standstill queueing way past the A127 to get through Upminster, the pollution alone is an environmental issue and this needs to be addressed now!

  4. The new phasing of the lights at the Bell corner is clearly a disaster. The traffic queues stretch back to Avon Road, almost a mile. On Saturday 10th March, I walked into Upminster and got into the town centre well ahead of the traffic. What appalled me, apart from the disruption, was pollution created. The fumes were dreadful and made my throat sore.

Transport For London are totally responsible for this pollution and should be liable to be fined as any business or organisation would be.

What is the point of us trying to cut down on pollution by buying cleaner cars and boilers when TFL completely negate all our efforts.

I find it amazing that when they make changes to anything that affects use of the roads etc, they just clear off and wait to see what happens.

They should immediately after any change, maintain a 24 hour monitoring to see the effect and if it doesn’t work, put it back to how it was until they come up with a solution that works.

  5. The phasing of Upminster town centre traffic lights have been changed and causing horrendous traffic flow issues. Having lived here for many years I can tell you the most effective phasing is as follows:
    1) Traffic from both sides of St Mary’s Lane
    Then
    2) Traffic From Station Road travelling South onto Corbets Tey Road and West into St Mary’s Lane
    Then
    3) Traffic From Corbets Tey travelling North into Station Road and East into St Mary’s Lane

That gives cars the chance to clear both the centre junction and Station Road. It also means people trying to cross from central reservation on Station Road side onto the West Pavement (by Creams) the opportunity to get there without dodging a constant stream of traffic.

  6. Today the traffic tailed back from Bell Corner TO the A127. I was supposed to take my grand daughters to Brentwood but after spending half an hour in this traffic I was too late to get them to Brentwood so did a U turn after Wylies only to join traffic back into Upminster via the Cranham traffic jam in front lane. There are temporary lights everywhere. Who is allowing this
And why is there no planning? THE LIGHTS AT BELL CORNER HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM FOR YEARS AND EVERYONE INCLUDING OUR COUNCILLORS KNOWS IT BUT NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO GET A RESOLUTION. I CAN’T SEE IT WILL BE ANY DIFFERENT THIS YEAR. Why is there no accountability?

  7. Now know yesterday’s gridlock from Bell Corner TO A127 was caused by an accident. Nothing to do with the rash of temporary lights and partial road closures that ring Upminster. It’s almost as if the officials that are responsible want to close Upminster down.
It would make sense to stagger the roadworks so they didn’t coincide all together resulting in misery for people using our roads in every direction. There should be a central point where such issues can be considered and co-ordinated.
As to the Bell Corner lights phasing has long been an issue. Generally the worse traffic jams are from the Lights up to the Huntsman where tailback past the Approach are not unusual. It doesn’t help when lights turn green and cars cannot go forward because people are still trying to get round the junction from another side. It all leads to gridlock but nothing is ever done.

  8. First commented on March and still problems in June! We feed and clothe
public servants, and they are certainly not, it seems, serving the public and the people of Upminster. Nothing works anymore. From here on, people should be sending invoices to TFP for lost time. Those responsible for this mess should have a percentage of their pay deducted for each day this fiasco continues. Only then perhaps some urgent action will be taken.
