Bus strikes affecting Cranham and Upminster

Transport for London (TfL) have advised that many routes operated by Arriva London North will be experiencing strike action in September and October 2026. Locally, the 248 and 370 bus routes will likely be affected.

Strikes are planned on the following days –

Between 4am Friday 04 September and 4.30am Saturday 05 September 2026
Between 4am Monday 07 September and 4.30am Tuesday 08 September 2026
Between 4am Friday 18 September and 4.30am Saturday 19 September 2026
Between 4am Monday 21 September and 4.30am Tuesday 22 September 2026
Between 4am Friday 02 October and 4.30am Saturday 03 October 2026
Between 4am Monday 05 October and 4.30am Tuesday 06 October 2026
Between 4am Friday 16 October and 4.30am Saturday 17 October 2026
Between 4am Monday 19 October and 4.30am Tuesday 20 October 2026

Nitrous oxide cannisters

The dumping of large nitrous oxide cannisters in Cranham Ward has become an issue over the last year. Cannisters are regularly being found in Front Lane and Hall Lane, both near to the A127, and it appears that gatherings are being held in the tithe barn car park on a weekly basis.

As well as the cannisters creating unsightly litter (thank you to the resident who regularly clears them up and puts them in a nearby council bin), possession of nitrous oxide was made illegal in 2023, if it is, or is likely to be, wrongfully inhaled (classified as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971).

There are also health risks. According to the renowned talktofrank.com website, which gives honest advice about drugs and their use, ‘It is very dangerous to inhale nitrous oxide directly from the canister, and doing it in an enclosed space is also very dangerous…If you take too much nitrous oxide you risk falling unconscious and/or suffocating from the lack of oxygen. People have died this way…Heavy regular use of nitrous oxide can lead to a deficiency of vitamin B12 and to a form of anaemia…Regular use can stop you forming white blood cells properly.’

Our local police team are aware of the locations where cannisters are regularly being found and will be looking to identify those engaging in this illegal activity.

No change to post Bank Holiday rubbish collections

Havering Council have conformed that there will be no change to rubbish and recycling collection days following the August Bank Holiday (2026).

Residents should leave their black and orange sacks (and green bin, if appropriate) out as normal from 7am on their usual day of collection.

Havering Astronomical Society September 2026 meetings

Havering Astronomical Society events are held at Thames Chase Forest Centre, Pike Lane, Upminster. For further information, please visit havastro.co.uk or e-mail enquiries@havastro.co.uk . Please note their concessionary rate of £30 for those aged 30 and under at time of joining.

The Adult group will meet on Wednesday 16 September 2026, 7.15 for 7.30pm. To be presented (at Thames Chase) via Zoom – Paul Money, regular speaker to HAS, author and former Reviews Editor of the BBC ‘Sky at Night’ magazine, will present ‘Atmospheres of the Solar System’.

Young Astronomers (aged 8-16) – Meetings are on the first Thursday of the month (7-8pm). These events are a mix of space news, talks, activities, and observing when possible. Please contact young.astronomers@havastro.co.uk for further details.

Freedom Pass portal temporarily unavailable

We have been informed that due to service upgrades, London Councils Freedom Pass online portal will be unavailable from 5pm on Monday 31 August until 9am on Tuesday 15 September 2026. Anyone who needs to apply for a Freedom Pass, request a replacement or update their details, should do so before the portal closes.

Existing Freedom Passes will continue to work as normal throughout the upgrade.

Park Farm Road closed Tuesday 25 August 2026

Havering Council has informed us that Park Farm Road, Upminster will be closed along its whole length (Hacton Lane to Harwood Hall Lane), from 8am – 5pm on Tuesday 25 August 2026, for line painting.

First Step golf day 2026

First Step, who support families of babies and young children with special needs and/or disabilities, will be holding their annual fund raising golf day at Langdon Hills Golf Club on Friday 18 September 2026.

The day will consist of a Full English breakfast, 18 holes of golf and dinner, with prizes and an auction.

The cost is £109 per person (£436 per four-ball).
