Over the recent bank holiday, Laurance Garrard (former Residents’ Association Councillor in Emerson Park and member of the Emerson Park Team) completed a charity bike ride, following the Queen Eleanor crosses from Lincoln to London.

Laurance raised over £1000 from sponsorships and donations. The total cycled was 220 miles over four days and was completed by several teams of various ages and abilities.

This was a very scenic ride, seeing some of rural Britain’s historic remains from the year 1290, starting in Harby and cumulating in a special service at Westminster Abbey.

Thank you to the local residents who supported him in raising funds for London’s homeless.

Our local Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams are warning of the increasing problem of spiked vapes.

At a recent crime prevention event outside the pubs in Hornchurch, none of the individuals spoken to were aware that vapes could be used as a means of spiking. When provided with practical examples, such as accepting a vape from an unknown person in a smoking area at a pub or nightclub, people quickly recognised how easily this could occur. Many stated that they would share this information with friends and family, helping to further raise awareness within the community.

The dumping of large nitrous oxide cannisters in Cranham Ward has become an issue over the last year. Cannisters are regularly being found in Front Lane and Hall Lane, both near to the A127, and it appears that gatherings are being held in the tithe barn car park on a weekly basis.

As well as the cannisters creating unsightly litter (thank you to the resident who regularly clears them up and puts them in a nearby council bin), possession of nitrous oxide was made illegal in 2023, if it is, or is likely to be, wrongfully inhaled (classified as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971).

There are also health risks. According to the renowned talktofrank.com website, which gives honest advice about drugs and their use, ‘It is very dangerous to inhale nitrous oxide directly from the canister, and doing it in an enclosed space is also very dangerous…If you take too much nitrous oxide you risk falling unconscious and/or suffocating from the lack of oxygen. People have died this way…Heavy regular use of nitrous oxide can lead to a deficiency of vitamin B12 and to a form of anaemia…Regular use can stop you forming white blood cells properly.’

Our local police team are aware of the locations where cannisters are regularly being found and will be looking to identify those engaging in this illegal activity.
