Scammers targetting older people
The TSB Bank have warned of an increase in ‘friendship fraud’, where fraudsters are targeting older people. The initial contact often seeks to exploit loneliness, and is frequently made via social media, with the scammer posing as a younger person. After gaining initial trust through daily messages, the fraudster starts to ask for money, giving reasons such as needing to pay for medical bills etc.
To stay safe online, be very suspicious of anyone unknown contacting you on social media and asking for money. If you are worried, talk to a friend or relative, or ring Age UK’s advice line on 0800 169 6565. The line is open seven days a week from 8am – 7pm.
