Essex and Suffolk Water’s (ESW) main upgrades

Directional drilling from trenches started on 14 July, with the initial pilot drill successfully completed. The second round of drilling is underway to expand the pilot tunnel. The construction programme is on track.

Current Issues

The most significant traffic congestion is focused at:

  • A127 westbound and on all approaches to the junction of Ardleigh Green Road and Squirrels Heath Road
  • B175 Havering Road at the approach to the junction with Lower Bedfords Road
  • Issues of rat running (congestion and/or speeding) being experienced on Garry Drive/Helmsdale Road, Heath Drive, and Rosslyn Avenue
  • Emergency works across the network are causing isolated and temporary delays. This included a burst water main at Ardleigh Green Road, which has now been repaired
  • Low railway bridge at Nags Head Lane has caused issues for HGV’s on diversion routes. Improved HGV diversion signage has been installed to mitigate this
  • Noise and disruption is being experienced by residents in the vicinity of Gallows Corner

General Updates

  • Diversion signage in the vicinity of Rise Park is being reviewed by Transport for London’s (TfL’s) contractor, Costain
  • TfL’s enforcement cameras are operational at the bus and emergency vehicle lane at Gallows Corner
  • School holidays have now started with a moderate reduction in traffic volumes during peak periods being anticipated
  • In terms of noise and disturbance, the noisiest site works ongoing at present is the directional drilling for the ESW water main works, which will be ongoing until August
  • Consultation for the introduction of the new signalized pedestrian crossing on Straight Road is ongoing. The consultation website can be found at consultation.havering.gov.uk/parking/straight-road/
