Stop Scams UK is an organisation with membership from many of the major banks, technology and telecoms industries, set up to fight back against fraud and scams.

Widely promoted, including by the BBC, they have a simple message – ‘If you think someone is trying to trick you into handing over money or personal details – stop, hang up and call 159 to speak directly to your bank.’

The 159 phone service was launched in 2021 and is now supported by banks covering 99% of all bank accounts held in the UK. When you dial 159, you are asked to say the name of your bank and you will automatically be put through to them.
