Swan Books Celebrates 80 Years in Upminster

Swan Books, situated in Corbets Tey Road opposite Upminster Library, celebrates its 80th Anniversary this year.

When the shop first opened in 1937, it was not only a bookseller and lending library, but also held lessons in  ‘office skills’ at the back of the shop. The unit changed hands in the early 50s and became just a bookshop and lending library, the latter ceasing when the outlet changed hands again in the early 60s. For the last 30 years, the independent bookshop has been managed by Jeremy Scott. According to the Booksellers Association’s annual membership figures, the number of independent book shops in the UK has almost halved in the last 11 years, from 1,535 in 2005 to 867 this year.

Swan Books is a great example of how independent shops add to the diversity, character and heritage of Upminster and we look forward to the 90th Anniversary!

The shop also has a website where books can be ordered, please visit HERE.
