Tithe barn National Highways funding application

Havering Council have asked the Leader of the council, Cllr Ray Morgan, to agree to apply for £650,000 of funding from National Highways, to make repairs and improvements to Upminster’s historic tithe barn.

The funding is part of money allocated by the Department of Transport for projects in the vicinity of the proposed Lower Thames Crossing.

Following discussions between the Council’s Parks team, Historic England and LTC Heritage Advisor regarding the condition of the Tithe Barn, the following improvements have been proposed:

  • Repairs to structural timbers, sole plates and brickwork
  • Replacement of Norfolk Reed thatch roof
  • Replace/repairs external weatherboard cladded walls, ground level drainage works to restore the french drain, works to steps and ground levels to ensure water doesn’t pool against the building
  • Installation of a WC
