An Idle Engine

Pollution is a key concern for most people, and one area which is often overlooked is that of motorists who park up outside schools or residential areas and leave their engines running for lengthy periods of time causing an unnecessary source of air pollution.

It is actually an offence under the Road Traffic (Vehicle Emissions) (Fixed Penalty) (England) Regulations 2002 to idle your engine when stationary (except for vehicles moving slowly due to road works or congestion; when stopped at traffic lights; vehicles under test or repair; or defrosting a windscreen).

A pilot scheme to raise awareness and enforcement of the practice was recently undertaken in the City of London and is to be rolled out among central London councils with the help of a £127,000 grant from the Mayor of London. If successful, the scheme could be rolled out to outer London boroughs.
