Damage to the City of London in World War Two
The London Picture Archive has published a series of over 350 photographs taken of damage to buildings in the City of London during the Second World War. The photos were all taken by two City of London Police Officers, Arthur Cross and Fred Tibbs, who were assigned to record the destruction caused by Luftwaffe bombing, from the start of the Blitz until the war ended.
Images include ones of Tower Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral, as well as a remarkable picture taken on 11 May 1941, of the upper storeys of a building at 23 Queen Victoria Street succumbing to fire and collapsing forward into the street.
The collection can be viewed for free online via londonpicturearchive.org.uk/ . Unfortunately, copyright of the pictures means that we cannot include one in this post.
