New safety scheme for HGVs in London

In March this year Transport for London (TfL), together with London’s borough councils, the freight industry and campaign groups, introduced a safety scheme for heavy goods vehicles.

Called the Direct Vision Standard (DVS), it is a requirement for all HGVs weighing more than 12 tonnes to drive in any of London’s boroughs. Owners must apply for a free permit, which gives a star rating based on how much the driver can see through their windows.

Since its introduction over 135,000 permits have been issued and almost 69,000 heavy goods vehicles have been fitted with safety measures to protect people cycling and walking.
